This was a project developed for the Faculties of Pharmacy, Medicine and Dentistry of the National University of Colombia in 2019. Located in an old building of the University Hospital of the same university, it was consolidated as a necessary functional alternative for areas shared by these faculties. I was the lead architect of the project, in charge of the university's Laboratory Department team.
It involved renovating the building, which includes a wellness area, waiting rooms, commercial spaces related to the services offered, dental units, sterilization, and oral hygiene on the first floor.
The second floor houses individual and group work areas, a medication storage area, a clean room, a Translational Research Laboratory, a Microbiology Laboratory, and sample reception areas.
The third floor features a state-of-the-art medical research laboratory.
The building's program revolved around an interior courtyard designed to create a spacious, well-lit, and monumental space.
The interdisciplinary work with the different faculties, despite the complexity of this interaction, made this project a concrete alternative to the need for laboratories and research areas that are not present on the university campus.
The complexity of the technical areas required by the program of each of the faculties involved in the project generated a robust project in terms of biosecurity, sample flows and specialized personnel.
Although the project remains on hold at the university, it remains a benchmark and an immediate necessity to strengthen the missionary work of both the participating faculties and the university itself.
Design as an architectural act that is the product of creation. And a creation that advocates for well-being and hope.
